Avoid These 4 Costly House Moving Mistakes
September 24, 2025Updated: 25/06/2026
Choosing the best time to move house in London can be confusing. Should you move on a Friday, Sunday, in summer, or wait until after school holidays? The right timing depends on your budget, work schedule, tenancy dates, and the removals company’s availability.
London adds extra challenges, too. Traffic, parking restrictions, flats with lifts, narrow streets, school holidays, rain, and peak moving dates can all affect your day.
UK Home Removals is here to make it easier. We help with house removals, flat removals, student moves, office moves, single-item removals, packing, furniture removals, and more across London. Read on to discover the best time, day, and month for your move.

Moving in Spring in London
Spring (March to May) is often a strong choice for London moves. London’s weather typically improves after winter, with temperatures becoming mild and daylight hours increasing. Many buyers and renters restart their search in spring, and removal companies start booking up as the season progresses.
During spring:
- Rain is possible, so protective covers and waterproof packing are wise.
- Roads are less congested compared with summer peak times, making travel smoother.
- Moving before the main summer rush may give you better removal slots and prices.
Spring suits those who want a fresh start, moderate weather, and good access to daylight without the heat and demand of summer. Spring can be a good balance of availability and cost.
Moving House in Summer in London
Summer (June to August) is the most popular season to move house in London. Long evenings, warmer weather, and school holidays make it easier for families with children. This season sees high demand for removal companies and many home exchanges.
In summer:
- Streets and parks are active with residents and visitors.
- Longer daylight hours help with packing and unloading.
- School breaks make it easier for families to avoid missing school.
- Traffic near major routes like A205, North Circular, South Circular, and near transport hubs can be heavier.
However, high demand often means higher costs and less availability. If you choose a summer move, booking early will help secure your preferred date.
Moving in Autumn in London
Autumn (September to November) can be one of the most practical periods for a house relocation in London. Summer demand decreases, while the weather remains largely mild in the early months. Many London movers find September and early October less stressful than peak summer months.
Autumn offers:
- Cooler days that make lifting and packing easier than in summer heat.
- More removal company availability compared with the summer.
- A calmer feel as schools return and holiday travel slows.
- Some rain and shorter daylight later in the season, which means good planning is important.
If your budget and schedule aren’t fixed to summer, autumn can be a strong contender in terms of cost and convenience.
Moving House in Winter in London
Winter (December to February) is often the most affordable season to move house in London. After Christmas and New Year, demand for removals drops, and many removal companies offer lower rates or more flexible booking options.
In winter:
- Short daylight hours require careful planning for loading/unloading.
- Rain and cold weather can make outdoor work harder.
- Bank holidays and school breaks may affect availability.
Roads around London (like the A40, M25, and West London roads) may be quieter outside rush hours. While not ideal for the weather, winter can save you money if cost is a priority.

Best Time of Year to Move House in London
When thinking about the best time to move house in London, most residents find early autumn the most balanced choice. Early autumn avoids the summer rush and gives most families time to settle before winter. It combines:
- Better removal availability than summer.
- More predictable weather than winter.
- Lower costs than peak summer months.
- Less competition among removal companies.
Best Month to Move House in London
If you want both a smoother experience and good pricing, September often outperforms other busy months. This month benefits from:
- Fewer removals than July/August.
- Mild weather and longer days than late autumn.
- Better removal company availability.
- The school term starts, which helps families settle before winter.
The Best Day of the Week for Your London Move
Choosing the right day can make your move easier and cheaper. According to UK removal data:
- Friday is the most popular, as it gives you weekend time to unpack.
- Tuesday and Wednesday can be less busy and often cheaper.
- Sunday tends to be more affordable, but it may not work for a solicitor or move‑in deadlines.
Is it Cheaper to Move on a Weekday or a Weekend?
In many cases, weekday moves (especially mid‑week) are cheaper than weekend moves because demand is lower. Removal companies often charge premium rates for weekends and Fridays, while Sunday is usually the cheapest moving day for London.
That said, if your move requires completion (for a sale), weekdays may still be essential because banks and solicitors work on those days. Also, weekday moves often avoid weekend traffic around the busiest roads and commuter routes.
What is the Cheapest Month to Move House in London?
For lower costs, February and sometimes January are usually the cheapest months. After the holiday season, demand slows down, and many removal companies offer more flexible dates and lower prices. To further reduce costs, consider weekday moves or off‑peak periods.
Moving on to School Holidays and Busy Periods in London
School holidays can make moving easier for families because children don’t have to miss school, but these periods also make removal companies busier and harder to book. In London, the busiest times include summer break (July and August), Easter week, half-term weeks, and the Christmas/New Year period. If you plan to move during these peak periods, it’s important to book your removal company well in advance to secure your preferred date and avoid delays.
Does Time of Year Affect Removal Rates?
Yes. Time of year, season, day of the week, school holidays, and local patterns (like London’s peak rental turnover schedule) all influence removal costs. Busy periods typically command higher prices and fewer available movers.
London removal rates tend to rise when:
- School holidays overlap with summer demand.
- End-of-month move dates are popular.
- Bank holidays occur.
- Many families and buyers plan moves.
Choosing a quieter period often leads to better rates and easier booking.
